The shinigami discuss Byakuya's betrayal, and the discovery that if a zanpakuto is killed by anyone other than its owner, it will be unusable. Byakuya returns to the zanpakutos' hideout, and proves his loyalty by defeating and seemingly killing Sode no Shirayuki, leaving Rukia unable to use her zanpakuto. Rukia and Renji investigate Byakuya's office, but Byakuya arrives with Senbonzakura, tossing Rukia the broken remains of her zanpakuto. Zabimaru arrives to help Renji fight Byakuya and Senbonzakura, but they are overpowered and several zanpakuto, including Tenken, Houzukimaru, Wabisuke, Rurio Kujaku and Gonryomaru, arrive. The Second Division surrounds the zanpakuto, the zanpakutos' owners come out to fight them, and Ichigo confronts Byakuya.

Celestial Being, a private organization dedicated to eradicating war, begins demonstrating the power of their new "Gundam" mobile suits by interrupting the public demonstration of AEU's latest unit, the AEU Enact. Setsuna F. Seiei, piloting the Gundam Exia, easily disables the AEU Enact, piloted by Patrick Colassaur. Pursuing the Exia, the AEU reveals hidden mobile suits in the Space Elevator, and in a separate operation, Celestial Being protects the Human Reform League's Space Elevator, "Tenchu" from being attacked by terrorists attempting to launch rockets upon it. Their actions garner global attention and various TV news channels soon broadcast a public statement by Aeolia Schenberg stating that Celestial Being's goal is to eradicate conflict from the face of the Earth.

Jiraiya succesfully infiltrates a village in the Country of Rain, where he wanders around and speaks to inhabitants about their leader, Pain. Unsuccesful in gathering information he captures two ninja of the city in a frog's stomach, who tell him the mysterious Pain has defeated the former leader of Rain, Hanzo. Meanwhile Pain orders Konan to search for the intruder for which she transforms in origami papers. Jiraiya faces off Konan while Pain is on his way. When Pain arrives, they discuss Pain's personal ideology and Akatsuki's goals. Pain, who is convinced Jiraiya is to die anyway, reveals the collection of the Tailed Beasts was in order to create a destruction jutsu which could wipe away entire nations, so that the world would "mature" and develop aversion for war. Finishing their talk, Pain summons a crustacean to attack Jiraiya, who defeats it and calls upon a giant frog in opening of their battle.

Ichigo meets with Momo and Rangiku, then reaches Muramasa, who is having difficult using his abilities in his current body. Ichigo fights Senbonzakura, and gains the upper hand before Byakuya arrives. Byakuya reveals that he has joined Muramasa as part of following his internal desire to uphold his pride, then attacks Ichigo.

As Hyorinmaru and Tōshirō begin to fight, Tōshirō tries to seal him but is shocked as Hyorinmaru effortlessly dissolves the seal into fragments of ice. As their fight continues, Hyorinmaru's tremendous power turns the whole of Soul Society's sky black. Toushiro began to recall his past during his first encounter with Hyorinmaru to convince him. Tōshirō managed to activate Hyorinmaru's shikai, thus managed to convince Hyorinmaru that Tōshirō is his master. Despite freezing himself along with his zanpakuto and losing consciousness, Tōshirō manages to convince Hyorinmaru of his identity.

Reunion

Ed and Lin face off against Envy, and Ed finds himself hesitating to attack due to all the people embedded into Envy's body and gets swallowed. Meanwhile, Scar and May find Shao May with Al and Gluttony and decide to follow them down to an underground tunnel, fighting off several chimeras. Ed spots the Philosopher's Stone inside Envy and manages to figure out a way to escape from Gluttony after seeing the missing piece from the ruins of Xerxes. Bradley explains to Roy how he was trained from birth for leadership and was injected with the Philosopher's Stone. Using various pieces of the Xerxes ruins found in Gluttony's stomach, Ed reuluctantly uses the souls inside Envy's stone to transmute himself and open the Door of Truth to escape through. Ed finds Al's body but is unable to bring it back since it isn't his. However, before the Door closes, he bursts through yelling to Al's body that he will come back to get him someday.

Envy also reveals he was the one who started the Ishbalan war, before transforming into a giant beast. Meanwhile, Al gets Gluttony to take him to Father, who is apparently in Central, and Bradley gets leverage over Roy by transferring his men to various headquarters and assigning Riza as his personal assistant, effectively making her his hostage.

Beyond The Heart's Darkness

The second exam resumes for the remaining trainees and comes in the worst form imaginable: the physical realisation of their deepest fears. When someone fails to overcome their fears, they fall through the bridge and fail. Teito gets to face his biggest enemy, Ayanami in the flesh. After charging blindly at Ayanami, Teito gets to see visions of the hurt and pain he caused Mikage and his family. Meanwhile, Hakuren finds his hated father on the ground with an unknown person in a black cape and weapon standing over him. Hakuren sees a vision of his father telling him he is no longer his son if he joins the church. The grim reaper tells Hakuren they should finish his father's pathetic, heartless life. The constant talking about Hakuren finally gets to Teito who is starting to blame himself for everything he has done to his best friend. When Ayanami charges at him, he is petrified and unable to move to dodge the attack and gets impaled by Ayanami's sword. Finally, the last trainees that haven't failed yet find the strength to face their fears. Hakuren saves his father and forgives him. Teito on the other hand is starting to go in shock. Some of the examinators worry for his life and urge bishop Lance to terminate the examn. It is then when Teito figures out that his real enemy is not Ayanami but himself, the part of him that is blaming himself for getting Mikage killed.
When Teito is ready and attempts to leave the second examination, the rest of the church gets invaded by the imperial army. And when Teito opens the door to exit the examination room, he finds himself in a dark, underground corridor instead of the exit. After a few seconds someone walks from the darkness towards Teito and this time, it is the real Ayanami who is standing in front of him...

He got told to never forget who he is, the Prince of Raggs Kingdom. Afterwards, they hurry back to the courtyard where bishop Lance is impatiently waiting for them. The second part of the examn is a challenge to face their inner daemons inside a room. They pass when they come out the other door. Hakuren starts of by defeating a gigantic Wars and Teito faces his biggest enemy: Ayanami in the flesh...

The military found out about the Eye of Mikhail and its master, Teito, and decide to search for him. Teito finds out that his Zaiphon seems to have been drained since the leaving of the Eye of Mikhail. One of his friends gives Teito some of his energy to allow him to be able to continue. After the examn starts, all the aspirant bishops enter the first hall. This chamber uses the fear in peoples hearts to hold them down, after Teito gathers his resolve he manages to walk out as one of the first. The next challenge is to answer questions in several rooms using their Zaiphon while trying to stay alive. Halfway through the examn, Teito decides to help the old men to cross the rope bridge. Finally they reach the last challenge: the challenge states that only one of them can pass through the door of Victor and the other has to use the door of the Defeated. After fighting each other, the winner has to write his name on the wall before passing through the door of the Victor. After arguing about it, they both run off through the door of the Defeated. After passing, a voice inquires why they choose this door and Hakuren replies: "Nobody has been defeated and nobody has won" at which point Teito says: "I'm just here to be with my friend". Bishop Lance appears and tells them that their selfless solution made them pass.

After being captured by Ayanami, Teito and Hakuren escape the military air ship and get support from Frau. After an intense battle the Eye of Mikhail attempts to save Teitos life by separating itself from Teito and taking the Wars with it. After separation the Eye unleashes its full power to destroy the enemies threatening Teito, making it rain fire upon the enemy air ships. Frau decided to save Teito and leave the Eye of Mikhail to fall in enemy hands. After cheering Teito up for losing the Eye of Mikhail, the other bishops give Frau a plant. Because bishop Bastian fell into the darkness, he was not reborn as a human, instead he was reborn as a tree. Frau planted the tree in the garden of the church so Bastian would be with them for many years to come. Teito finally recognises Hakuren as his friend and prepares for the bishop examn. On their way to the examn Teito accidentally steps on a key token that one of the bishops dropped and broke it. Unfortunatly for Teito, that same bishop, Lance, is their head examiner...

Ichigo encounters Hyourinmaru, who cannot remember his name or that of his master. He attempts to freeze Ichigo and leave, but Toshiro confronts him. Elsewhere, Muramasa kills a large number of hollows, including several Menos Grandes.

Envy arrives to stop Gluttony from harming Ed and Al. Hearing this, Ed and Al face Gluttony whilst Lin faces against Envy. After some struggles on both ends, Gluttony ends up accidentally swallowing Ed, Lin and Envy. Roy goes to a meeting and ends up confronting Bradley and realising what Hughes meant. Ed wakes up in a strange room, covered in blood.

Ichigo reports his findings of Muramasa's abilities to Ukitake, Shunsui and Unohana. In order to find out about Muramasa's effects on zanpakutō, Ichigo and Ikkaku patrol Seiretei to seek out the entities. Meanwhile, someone breaks into a compound and knocks out the Soul Reapers guarding the area. Ōmaeda and his men stumble on the unconscious guards and investigate, only to encounter his zanpakutō spirit, Gegetsuburi and Hozukimaru. Ōmaeda and Gegetsuburi are just about to fight when Ichigo and Ikkaku interrupt. Ōmaeda is knocked out of the fight, leaving Ichigo to battle Gegetsuburi, while Ikkaku fights Hozukimaru. Ichigo defeats Gegetsuburi but Ikkaku is wounded by Hozukimaru's bankai. Just as he attempts to continue the battle, Ukitake, Shunsui, Soi Fon and her Stealth Corps arrive to surround Hozukimaru, but he uses his bankai to get away. However, they manage to obtain Gegetsuburi. Ichigo goes after Hozukimaru, but the entity escapes when Senbonzakura's petals block Ichigo's route. Ichigo discovers that the attack was from Byakuya, who disappears.

Girl on the Battlefield

Ed leaves Winry in the custody of the military to catch up with Al. Meanwhile, as Bradley continues to chase after Lin and Lan Fan, Gluttony goes after Scar. As Ed rejoins Al in his fight against Scar, Gluttony arrives on the scene. Lin then joins the fight, and is able to capture Gluttony by using his regenerative ability against him. Lan Fan manages to escape Bradley by cutting off her disabled arm to throw off her blood trail. Riza arrives and drives off with Ling and Gluttony, keeping it secret from the military. As Ed and Al are about to apprehend Scar, they are stopped by May Chang, who uses her alkahestry to escape with him. However, Ed and Al manage to take custody of her panda, Xiao Mei. As they arrive back at HQ, they tell Winry everything. She feels depressed, believing all she can do is wait, but feels better when she receives a call from her customers back in Rush Valley. As she goes on the train back, Winry thinks she may be in love with Ed. Ed and Al later join up with the others at a hideout, where Lan Fan's wounds are treated. Lin reveals to Ed, Al and Roy that Bradley is a homunculus. When Gluttony hears mention of Roy, the one who killed Lust, he transforms and blows the corner off the hideout.

Initially, Gil was hesitant about going with the Nightrays as Vessalius and Nightray households are rivals. In the end, he chooses to go with Break, and met Vincent. Upon their reunion, Gil reveals that he had no memory of Vincent, his younger brother. As he grew, he finally found a way to tame Raven, and ultimately establish a contract with it. This is how Gil gained his nickname "Raven".

Grim

Oz somehow manages to suppress Alice's power, and confronts Phillip's father. Amid memories of his own father's coldness, Oz tells him that being by Phillip's side will be enough even without changing their past tragedies. Their conversation is cut short as Vincent Nightray shoots Grim's contractor and sends him back to the abyss. They return in Vincent's carriage and ride to the Reinsworth manor, where Alice asks Oz why he was so worked up over Phillip's father, and Vincent claims to be a blood relative of Gilbert. Break shows Vincent to the door while discussing a theory that somebody inside Pandora was responsible for allowing Grim to escape. It is clear that Break suspects Vincent.

Malediction

Oz saves a boy named Phillip, a kid from a noble family that just became poor. A flashback came to Oz when Philip asked about Oz's parents. 10 years ago, young Gilbert was about to ask why Oz's father couldn't talk to him. He responded that Oz is too filthy and unfit to be his son. After three days in the dungeon, Gil apologizes to Oz for interfering in his life, but Oz says it doesn't matter and accepts the fact that his father just hates him. After the flashback, the girl how brought the flowers, named Echo, comes to take Philip as a hostage, whose father is revealed to have become an illegal contractor. Pandora member, Reim (Liam), explains that Grim escaped their grasp unharmed, which is distressing. While Echo chases after Phillip and Oz chases her, Gil and Alice look for a chain that Alice has sensed. Since it is no use for Phillip to be a hostage, Echo goes after the chain. She is injured in the process, but Vincent comes along and holds her back. He tells her to just watch. Gil then releases Alice's powers, but Oz wants to stop her from killing Phillip's father. In his mind, the man from his vision tells him that he can hold her back.

Teito, now staying in the church, wonders what he can do to atone for Mikage's death. Castor advises him to take the Bishops Exam. Teito decides to take it, and Castor says he must pass the written exam first: memorize 7700 chapters from 77 volumes of Barsburg Bible in half a month. It took Frau three years to memorize it, but when Teito takes a look at one of the books, he realizes he has read them before. Teito reveals he remembers most of it. The second exam tests the person's ability to use Zaiphon techniques. When Teito doesn't progress with using a bascule, or staff, Castor gives Teito a Frau doll with incredible speed. After the doll acts like a pervert to the three sisters, Teito activates the staff and blows the doll up. After a talk with Labrador, Teito decides to learn and expose the truth of the world. While wandering in the hall, Teito sees a person looks like Mikage, but unfortunately is an examinee named Hakuren Oak. Hakuren sees the Bishops Exam Participating Mark on Teito's neck and declares Teito his rival.
